HEDGECUTTERS, NYLON LINE TRIMMERS & BRUSHCUTTERS

HEDGE CUTTERS

Four brands in stock, STIHL, HUSQVANA, LAWNFLITE & TANAKA, offering a choice of sizes and features - Electric, petrol, single sided, double sided, fixed handle, swivel handle, long reach and swivel head there's a machine for every application!
Options:

Cordless hedgecutters

Battery electric

These are usually lightweight, light duty machines with plug in rechargeable dry cells and until recently have only been suitable for light use in small gardens. They often have a low initial purchase price but he cost of replacement batteries can be a nasty shock!

A recent development is the advent of LITHIUM ION (Li-Ion) batteries. These new batteries have greater power, longer run-time and need less charging time compared with anything available to date. In addition they don’t suffer from the “memory effect” problems associated with some older battery technologies.

Mains electric

Electric machines are ideal for regular hedge maintenance in small, formal gardens where cable runs are short and the material being trimmed is mainly small soft growth. The exception is where a heavy-duty electric machine is used in conjunction with a quiet portable generator in a remote location or in a situation where the noise, weight or exhaust emissions of a petrol powered unit are unacceptable. (See the Generator section of this site)

Petrol Hedgecutters

Petrol powered.
The workhorses for rural gardens and runaway growth!
On the plus side they can maintain a high rate of work anywhere, without the need to recharge or the restriction of trailing cables.

On the minus side they are heavier and noisier than electric machines and some operators find the exhaust emissions oppressive.

Long-pole Hedgecutters.
These are either dedicated machines, an attachment for a brush cutter or part of a power-pack and interchangeable tool system such as the STIHL KombiSystem or Tanaka Smart-Fit range.
LongPole

Long Pole

BOSCH.
A huge range of battery and mains electric machines including two using the Li-Ion battery technology.

Lawnflite.
Have a range of six petrol-powered units including one long reach unit.

Tanaka.
The range covers ten conventional units including one with a 40" bar and two pole units with swivel heads. Two models, the THT-210 & THT-2520 have Quick-Twist rear handles making them equally suitable for left or right-handed operators.

Stihl.

NYLON LINE TRIMMERS, BRUSH CUTTERS, CLEARING SAWS

bushcutter Definitions and Features:
Nylon-line trimmers are mainly tools for clearing up the bits that the mower can't get to - close to buildings, walls and fences or the sides of ditches or banks etc. and range from light-weight battery or mains electric units to heavy duty petrol machines equipped with 2 or 4 line heads.

Brush cutters - petrol engined, and fitted with various designs of steel blade they can be used for scything large areas of long grass, nettles or brambles.

clearing saw

Clearing saws - for forestry use. The engine will probably be 50cc or more and will be coupled to a heavy-duty clutch, shaft assembly and gearbox. Also, the machine is likely to incorporate advanced anti-vibration systems to protect the operator during long periods of use.

Multi-tool systems

These comprise an engine or power head with a variety of interchangeable tools such as trimmers, hedgecutters, rotary brushes and tillers.

Stihl KombiSystem - four power heads and (at the last count!) twelve attachments.

Stihl MultiTool system – a heavier duty system offering, a scarifier, dethatcher, tiller and brush.

Tanaka Smart-Fit two power heads and five attachments.

Glossary of terms:

Shafts - bent/straight. A shaft is used to transmit the drive from the engine to the cutting head.

Bent ShaftBent shaft machines use a flexible shaft running in an outer tube that is curved at the head end to achieve the working angle. This type of drive is limited in the amount of power that can be transmitted and is usually found on electric and low-powered petrol units using nylon line heads.

Straight ShaftStraight shaft machines use a rigid steel drive shaft running in bearings within the tube. A small gearbox is used to obtain the working angle while transmitting the torque required to drive a steel blade.

Sling

Harnesses - Sling / Full.
Most petrol powered machines have sling or harness that the operator wears to carry the weight of the machine leaving the hands free to "steer" it. Lighter machines use a single diagonal shoulder sling while heavier units have a harness with straps over both shoulders- full harness. Both types of harness usually have a spring latch that allows the machine to be easily detached for refueling, starting or line replenishment.

Bent Shaft
"Loop"

Handles
Lighter machines have a single loop handle for the forward hand while heavier machines have a double or "cowhorn" handle that gives greater control against kickback and prevents the operator inadvertently pulling the blade back towards himself. Machines being used with a steel blade must have "cowhorn" handles or be fitted with a safety bar to keep the operator away from the blade.

Straight Shaft
"Cow-horn"

. In this configuration the engine is carried
rucksack style on the operator's back with a
heavy-duty flexible drive conveying the drive to the head.

Nylon line heads - Manual feed, Tap and Brain. Manual feed heads- stop the machine, unhook it from the harness, undo a knob, pull out some line and then reverse the procedure! Tap feed - shut the throttle tap the head on the ground, rev the engine and a measured length of line will feed from the spool within the head. Brain heads sense the centrifugal force generated by the line when the throttle is closed and re-opened and maintain it at optimum length.

We stock machines from four major manufacturers STIHL, Lawnflite Tanaka and Husqvarna.

STIHL Four electric nylon line trimmers, two light-weight bent shaft petrol powered trimmers , six medium weight units and six clearing saws
